Bob McGrath Obituary, Death – His family confirmed the news on social media that he passed away on Sunday at the age of 90. BOB MCGRATH was one of the first human characters to appear on Sesame Street, playing the role of Bob Johnson in the show’s pilot episode in 1969.
“Hello, dear friends on Facebook, The McGrath family has some unfortunate news to relay to you at this time. The passing of our father, Bob McGrath, occurred today. On Sunday, the deceased’s family shared on Facebook that he passed away “peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.”
From the show’s inception in 1969 until its cancellation in 2016, McGrath was a member of the Sesame Street cast and played the role of Bob Johnson, a recurring character who is also the resident music teacher. However, he kept making appearances at public events for the series, such as numerous Comic Cons, where he would meet with fans of the show.
He was born on June 13, 1932, in Ottawa, Illinois, and spent his childhood there. He displayed an early interest in music by singing for his family, and he went on to earn a degree in music from the University of Michigan. While he was a student at the University of Michigan, he participated in the school’s Glee Club. In later years, he attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he concentrated on voice study and ultimately earned a master’s degree.
After appearing in Mitch Miller’s series Sing Along With Mitch, he went on to release a series of albums in Japan, where he became something of a teen music sensation under the name “Bobu Magulas.” He disclosed this fact during an episode of To Tell the Truth that aired in 1966. Prior to becoming a cast member on Sesame Street, he was a featured performer on Mitch Miller’s series Sing Along With Mitch.
In 1969, he became a member of the cast of Sesame Street, where he went on to star in numerous productions that were not related to the series itself, such as holiday specials and film offshoots. His tenure as a cast member came to an end officially in 2016, when it was announced that he would not be returning for the show’s 47th season due to the fact that the series was undergoing a redesign; however, he continued to represent the show at subsequent in-person appearances.
